Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has cancelled his planned tour of the Mt. Kenya region, citing credible threats to public safety. He revealed that intelligence reports indicated organized groups had been mobilized to disrupt his meetings, prompting him to call off the visit to avoid potential violence.
Drawing on his background in national security, Matiang’i expressed concern that such actions could only occur with some level of coordination or complicity, suggesting the possibility of insider involvement. He called on authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice, rather than issue blanket accusations against opposition leaders.
Matiang’i also criticized the use of force to stifle political engagement, warning that Kenya’s democratic gains were under threat. He urged leaders to respect the rule of law and protect constitutional freedoms, noting that a healthy democracy depends on tolerance, accountability, and responsible governance.
