New IEBC Team Sworn In Amid Hopes for Electoral Reform

Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been officially reconstituted following the conclusion of recent legal proceedings, with seven commissioners sworn in at noon on Friday, July 11, 2025. The team comprises Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, Fahima Abdallah, and chairperson Dr Erastus Edung Ethekon. Their installation follows a High Court ruling that dismissed a petition challenging the appointments, thereby paving the way for them to assume office.

Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the ceremony and urged the newly appointed commissioners to work diligently in restoring public confidence in the electoral body, emphasizing that trust must be earned through transparent conduct, integrity, and decisions that reflect the will of the Kenyan people. The appointments mark a fresh beginning for the IEBC, though some critics remain cautious, highlighting past shadows of controversy during the vetting and gazettement process, amid claims of undue political influence.
