The Nigerian government has announced Tuesday as a public holiday in memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82 in a London clinic on Sunday after a prolonged illness.
President Bola Tinubu, who had earlier declared a week-long national mourning, approved the holiday to give Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on Buhari’s legacy. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” stated Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, who had been with Buhari’s family in London, confirmed the former president would be buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura. “The body is expected to arrive at noon and the burial will take place by 2pm,” he said. The funeral, initially set for Monday, was postponed due to logistical issues.
According to officials, Buhari’s remains will be flown directly to Katsina airport before being transported to Daura, located around 80km from the state capital. His residence in Daura has already filled with mourners awaiting his return.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima confirmed Buhari died following a brief illness, though further details were not disclosed.
Despite serving as both military ruler and elected president, Buhari will not receive a state funeral. In accordance with Islamic tradition, he will be buried swiftly in a modest ceremony, cleric Abdullahi Garangamawa told the BBC.
Tributes have poured in from across the nation and beyond. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, whom Buhari defeated in the 2015 election, described him as a leader driven by selfless service and patriotism. General Ibrahim Babangida, who overthrew Buhari in a 1985 coup, also praised his character, saying he remained a moral guide and example of modesty even in retirement.
President Tinubu, who will attend the funeral prayers in Daura, stated in a condolence message that the country will honour Buhari with dignity, starting with the lowering of flags to half-mast nationwide throughout the mourning period.
